TV Drama Getting People Travelling

June 24th, 2009 by flowaine18

(Heroine Geum Jan-di and the main character Gu Jun-pyo take a romantic getaway to a New Caledonian beach in KBS smash hit “Boys Before Flowers”)

Thirty-year-old Park Hyun-ju is getting married in March and has seriously considered New Caledonia as her honeymoon destination. “I never knew there was such a place, but after watching TV drama “Boys Before Flowers,” it suddenly got on the map,” she said. She gave up the plan and has chosen somewhere else, but said her friends are also considering the location as a honeymooner’s nest.

New Caledonia Surges as Popular Place

Japanese writer Katsura Morimura described the place as “The Island Closest to Heaven,” but it wasn’t until four fabulous boys took a little girl out on a romantic spree that New Caledonia has appealed to Koreans as a must-visit destination.

The small screen smash hit shows glimpses of the luxurious lives of jet-setting, wealthy heirs. With the tourism industry struggling due to the plummeting economy, Korean audiences are smiling, with people rushing to catch a glimpse of the F4 ― the four fabulous boys.

The TV drama showed every aspect of the island ― its cozy but flashy resorts, the heart-shaped island; helicopter tour and other leisure activities one can take part in on a holiday there. Likewise, New Caledonia Tourism has been holding aggressive promotions in recent years, from providing free flights as lottery prizes to holding online campaigns.

However, upon being featured in the drama, it suddenly became a coveted vacation destination. According to Web page ranker Overture, the New Caledonia Tourism Web site marked 13,107 page views through portals such as Naver and Yahoo to become the most viewed tourism office Web site among Koreans in January, leaving Singapore, in second place, far behind, with 7,046 views.

Tourists agencies are busy preparing special packages for honeymooners. Lotte, Mode and other major agencies are rushing to attract travelers with bargain prices ranging from 1.7 million to 3 million.

Macao is now becoming audiences ― second target. Dubbed the “Las Vegas of Asia,” the little Chinese territory is filled with extravagant hotels, casinos and shopping malls.

From artificial torrents to staggering casinos and luxurious restaurants and hotels, the jaw dropping scenery matched with the business tycoon image of the beautiful boys as adults. “We are not really seeing the number of tourists going up yet since our episode aired only a couple of weeks ago, but we’re definitely receiving more telephone calls since then, some asking about specific locations in the drama,” Lee Min-young, a Macao Tourists’ Office staff member, said.

The online world is heating up. Bloggers are busy posting pictures and portal sites are filled with people asking questions about the place.

Fans Rush to Locations

The popularity of the drama draws fans to filming locations.

Group Eight, the production company, tries its best to express the luxurious lifestyle of the “F4″, or the four rich pretty boys in the show. Small wonder that local hotels are popular destinations of the Boys Before Flowers production team.

Damyang Dynasty Country Club, a luxurious golf course that opened in June 2008 in South Jeolla Province, is famous to fans of the series. The clubhouse there was used as the home of Gu Jun-pyo, the leading character, played by newcomer Lee Min-ho. “The grand exterior of the clubhouse and a large white fountain with sculptures in front add a sophisticated touch to Gu’s house,” said Park Rae-hyun, of Group Eight. However, the interior of the house was shot elsewhere.

Yun Ji-hu is another member of F4, played by singer-turned actor Kim Hyun-joong. Since the character is the grandson of a former president, the producers looked for a classical location to film as his home. Ragung, a hanok (Korean traditional house) hotel in Silla Millennium Park, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, was the perfect choice, built in the traditional architectural style with a modern interior.

Hilton Namhae Gold & Spa Resort, located in South Gyeongsang Province, was another location of the flowery drama. Min Seo-hyeon (played by actress Han Chae-young) held her welcoming party at the resort and heroine Geum Jan-di (Ku Hye-sun) appeared at the party in a Wonder Woman costume. The scenes of Geum saving Gu in a swimming pool were also shot at Hilton Namhae.

“Since it was very cold and the filming took place late at night, the actors seemed very tired. Lee Min-ho stayed at the resort for a day after the exhausting shooting,” an official of Hilton Namhae said.

From Ice Rinks to Hotels

Grand Hyatt Seoul’s famous ice rink once again appeared in the drama when Gu and Geum went out to skate with the latter’s friends. The hotel’s grand ballroom was where Gu’s 20th birthday party took place.

Lotte Hotel World’s Emerald Room and group lounge appeared in the show_ second episode and will appear again. Suh Kwang-il, the manager of the PR Department at Lotte Hotel, is in charge of product placement promotions. “The director, or public relations person, contacts us if they think our hotel fits the scene they want to shoot. When her or she has worked with us already, it’s much easier to fine tune filming details,” he said.

Sometimes hotels and production cooperate in the early stages and publicize the place or product throughout the drama. “For example, Lotte Hotel is the main location for MBC’s “East of Eden” and will be the hotel for Kwon Sang-woo’s next drama, “Cinderella Man,” Suh said.

Go You Xin, a Taiwanese national who likes Korean pop culture, watched the Korean drama through the online video site YouTube and immediately fell for it. When she visited Korea for Big Bang’s concert, a Korean friend, Woo, took her to the filming spots of the hit drama, such as N Seoul Tower on Mt. Namsan, and took pictures imitating scenes from the program.

They also visited the porridge restaurant where Jan-di and her friend worked part time. Go became the first Taiwanese fan to do so. Then they went to restaurant Farmer’s Table in Heyri, which was used for a school cafeteria scene. At the end of the day, Go was lucky enough to find out about the next day’s shooting from the owner of “Jandi Laundry,” which also appears in the show.

The next day, Go returned and watched the filming of a scene with the two main characters, Lee Min-ho and Ku Hye-sun, at an illuminated playground in front of the cleaner. However, Group Eight did not want to disclose filming locations. “It’s almost impossible to film on location due to crowds of fans, so we try not to reveal such information,” said an official.

For example, they wanted to film a scene of Gu on a date with Geum at Cheonggye Stream, but had to give up due to the pre-informed crowd and filmed the shot near Hongik University instead.

Despite the production’s hardships, fans still flock to filming locations, which take the toll of being popular. Keimyung University in Daegu, for instance, provided the exteriors of Shinhwa High School and has since suffered from endless graffiti from fans.

The Drama is Cash Cow

A TV industry insider said the drama is now a cash cow. “Given the economic slump, that particular drama is the only one that actually makes money. Everyone in the tourism industry is lined up to have their area featured on the show but it’s too late since we’re in the middle of filming,” he confided.

There are several examples of TV making spots famous, not to mention the movie The Lord of the Rings, which brought billions of dollars to New Zealand’s tourism industry. Korea’s “What Happened in Bali” marked the location as an exotic and luxurious southern island and “Lovers in Prague” made many dream about romance in eastern Europe.

“Dramas make viewers fantasize about what they don’t have and becoming something they aren’t. By going where show characters have been, people get a breath of fresh air and get to enjoy an exotic atmosphere, which everyone wants,” Prof. Hyun Taek-su of Korea University’s Sociology department said.

Tough Competition For Kim Bum’s First Love

June 24th, 2009 by flowaine18

In order to find a suitable actress to play as So Yi Jung’s (Kim Bum) first love in “Boys Before Flowers, the production company Group Eight has began a series of selection processes as early as one month ago. Out of all the interviewees, they have filtered and after rounds of selections, two finalists remain. But there is one major headache for the production team as they are unable to decide on the final actress, given their equal strength.

This tough competition is likely due to the fact that whoever gets to play a role in “Boys Before Flowers” will get substantial media attention, as can be seen from supporting actors such as Lee Si Young, Jung Eui Chul, Gook Ji Yun, Lee Min Jung etc. Furthermore, with the high viewership over 30%, the production team is also cautious to which the actress is suitable to play as So Yi Jung’s first love.

As scheduled, this character will make its appearance in episode 18, which is to be shown on the 3rd March. Although the character image has been completed about one, two weeks ago, the actress has not been finalized.

The production team said: We are only one week till the airing of episode 18 and we need to finalize the actress within this short period.”

Well, this is what you get when a drama gets too popular. But it brings me to wonder what will happen if this is only a sub 10% viewership drama? Will the actors need to undergo such stringent and rounds of selections? Anyway, I’m curious to see who is it as well. On a side note, Lee Min Jung was really hilarious in last nights episode, when she was captured into the ballroom.

With the popular wave for KBS 2TV Mon-Tue drama ‘Boys Before Flowers’, the lead actors F4 market worth are on the rise. Who holds the highest market worth out of the 4 males in F4 now, after the end of 12 episodes?

The correct answer is Kim HyunJoong. It was known that the other members have not even reached to half of Kim HyunJoong’s amount.

Kim HyunJoong’s company DSP Entertainment revealed that Kim HyunJoong received about 20 over modeling invitations from various commercial agencies. The company compiled the total to 40billion won, which only included contracts that were made after ‘Boys Before Flowers’ was broadcasted.

The confirmed contracts are cosmetic brand ‘TonyMoly’, male formal clothing brand ‘MVIO’, chicken franchise ‘Hotsun Chicken’, NongShim ‘AnSung Soup Noodle’, and ‘Anycall’ with all F4 members, etc. The endorsement fee for TonyMoly was 3billion won and besides this, he also engaged in various CFs and public events.

His company said “The total amount will still increase if we count the CFs which we are currently considering.” Japan cosmetic brand and multinational beverage brand and even some luxurious cosmetic brands also joined in ‘to get Kim HyunJoong’.

The company added “Because of the condition in the contract that everything should be kept secret, we are not able to reveal anything more.” Kim HyunJoong has already received a lot of attention in the commercial field during his appearance in MBC TV ‘Sunday Sunday Night’ popular section ‘We Got Married’, and his worth increased a notch after being in ‘Boys Over Flowers’. Even the items (that he models) are diverse, ranging from female cosmetics to cars to furniture.

Kim HyunJoong’s fans was encouraged “Now there will probably have a parody for ‘Kim HyunJoong’s one day’, at home where its decorated with ‘Kim HyunJoong brand’ furniture, you apply the cosmetic that Kim HyunJoong models for, drive the car to work, use Anycall handphones and eat Hotsun Chicken and AnSung Soup Noodles.”

His company said “In the later episodes, Kim HyunJoong’s role as Yoon JiHoo will have a more important relevance which will help him even more to rise his market worth.

There will NOT be another version of HYD for the next 2 YEARS.

June 24th, 2009 by flowaine18

Hana Yori Dango’s writer had stated that for the next two years, Hana Yori Dango’s drama making will not be allowed.

KBS 2TV ‘ Boys Before Flower’s Production Group, Group 8’s associate had made a statement on the 13th that “When Kamio Yoko and the Japan’s HYD manga issuing company Shueisa and GROUP 8 signed the copyright contract for HYD krn drama version, we had signed a contract that had stated: from the time BOys Before Flower korean drama had finished, there would be no new versions of HYD made nor aired for the next 2 years.”

HYD’s taiwanese version was made in 2001 and season 2 was made in 2003. Japan’s seasion one aired in 2005 and seasion 2 was made in 2007. And after 2 years, 2009’s Boys Before Flower korean version had been made and is gaining popular both inside and outside of Korea. The original writer agreed in protecting the Korean version’s value by signing the contract stating that for the next 2 years the HYD copyright will not be sold to others and put on the restriction.

So with this news, the chinese version of “hana yori dango” is highly likely that it is not the original copyrighted version of HYD manga series.

GROUP 8 had mentioned : The supposed chinese version of ” HANA YORI DANGO” is under investigation by the Shueisha copyright ( HYD manga issuer, Kamio’s company.) checking on its basic storyline, after the rumors about the chinese version’s F4 casting picture was comparing to the Korean F4 cast was floating around the net.

‘Boys Before Flowers’ Refreshed Own Record to 25.9%

June 24th, 2009 by flowaine18

KBS 2TV ‘Boys Before Flowers’ refreshed their personal best record and maintained their 1st place position for Mon-Tue drama slot.

Viewership rating company TNS media Korea reported 25.9% national rating for episode 8 of ‘Boys Before flowers’ broadcasted on 27-Jan. This is about 2% higher than 24.1% rating which they had achieved on 20-Jan.

With this, ‘Boys Before flowers’ has maintained their 1st place position for 2 consecutive days in the Mon-Tue drama competition and brought about a syndrome.

On the other hand, ‘East of Eden’ which airs on the same timeslot and had been doing well in the Mon-Tue drama ratings, only achieved 21.8% on that day. Though it is a 4.3% increase from its broadcast rating of 17.5% on 26-Jan, it is unable to beat the improving ratings of ‘Boys Before Flowers’.

In the same timing, SBS special movie ‘The Best Moment of My Life’ only achieved 11.1%.

Boys Before Flowers’ Dethrones ‘East of Eden’

June 24th, 2009 by flowaine18

Now for some TV ratings report in the early morning of second day of the Lunar New Year. KBS 2TV’s “Boys Before Flowers” has overtaken the reigning champion, MBC’s “East of Eden“, in TV ratings, for the first time since its debut.

According to TNS Media Korea, “Boys Before Flowers” captured a 19.5% nationwide rating in yesterday’s broadcast, giving it a 2% lead over the 17.5% obtained by “East of Eden”.

Despite the switching of positions on the rating list, both the dramas saw their viewership dropped by a significant number. This can be mostly attributed to the Korean New Year (Lunar New Year) which fell on the 26th January. This really came as a surprise for me as I had thought that the widening of gap last Tuesday would have provided some support for “East of Eden”. I didn’t think “Boys Before Flowers” would have a 2% lead this fast.

A side note, SBS “Terroir” was not aired yesterday due to the Lunar New Year celebration and will only be back next week.
